What we as ordinary people can do to prevent coral reefs to be extinct

Well, the most basic thing that anyone can do to save the coral reefs is to recycle. Recycle plastic bottles, drink cans, paper or anything that comes to your mind about recycling! Next thing that all of us can do is to reuse things that can be reused, such as paper or even cardboard! For paper you can actually use it to make origami instead of throwing it away! The same thing goes for the cardboard as well! Next is to reduce things, so that we will not waste anything. You can reduce the use of paper by using both sides of the paper instead of just one.
A harder thing to do is to start a recycling committee in the school. This can be done by giving a enviromentally friendly bag to each class to use it as a recycling bag. After the end of each term, weigh the bags and see which class colldected the most amount of paper which is to be recycled. The class which has the heaviest bag wins a prize(Per level, 1 champion and one overall champion)

Purpose of IYOR (International Year Of The Reef)

2008 has been designated as the International Year of the Reef (IYOR), celebrated worldwide to raise awareness abut the importance of coral reefs and threats to their sustainability, and to motivate people to take action to protect them. A key member of IYOR is the Underwater World Singapore.

How to prevent the threats to be carried out

Well the most important thing for us to do to save the coral reefs is to MANAGE OUR IMPULSIVITY! Why do I say that?
Well, because if you observe all the threats faced by the coral reefs they are actually not only due to human activity but also for the idea of 'fun'. If you ever seen dynamite fishing, it is actually because people want to have more fishes, so they just bomb the sea to get more fishes!
In bleaching and ocean acidification it is due to us humans using objects that give out carbon dioxide(eg.cars)! Worst of all in worldwide destruction, they all happen at the same time is because of human activities!

Threats faced by the coral reefs

Huuman activities may represent the greatest threat to coral reefs living in Earth's oceans and seas. Some big causes of pollution are:
1)Pollution- When people start to dump rubbish into the waters which will make the oceans and sea water become dirty which irritates the life of the coral reefs.
2)Land development- The soil coming from farming and consructing of roads, buildings, ports, channels and harbors causes pollution.
3)Dynamite fishing- When an explosive, such as grenades are lowered into the seaand activated, the explosive will explode causing the fishes and corals to die instantly due to the impact. A second blast is normally set of to destroy other larger predators around.
4)Bleaching-High sea temperature coupled with high heat intensity, triggers the loss of zooxanthellae, a symbiotic algea which will cause its dinoflagellate pigmentation in corals causing it to lose its clour and then it will eventually die out.
5)Ocean acidification-More carbon dioxide gas is dissolved into the water which reacts to form carbonic acid resulting in ocean acidification, causing the corals to die out.
6)African and Asian dust outbreaks-Dust from the Sahara desert moves towards the other cities through the sea. The dust can irritate the corals as the corals in an experiment has shown that dust has linked to the decline in the coral reefs. Coral reefs also can incoperate dust into their bodys which is bad to them.
7)Destruction worldwide- This is basically what was just explained(Pollution, Bleaching etc.) but it not only happens all around the world but also at the same time!
What do you notice about all the causes of the coral reefs dying out?
They are all linked, somehow, to human activities!

Our team's passion on saving the reef and marine conservation

We have come up with a few ideas and started to share them with our other classmates. Soon, we started to venture more into telling people to save the marine life and the coral reefs. Hence, we told all of our classmates and then continued sharing our thoughts on saving the marie life with the rest of the classes and then to the other levels. Hence we became more enthusiastic in conserving marine life and we were more enthusiastic on going green as well.

Famous coral reefs

Their are many coral reefs in the world which are actually in danger from extinction even though they come in a very big number.
Some famous reefs are:
1)The Great Barrier Reef-largest coral reef system in the world found in Queensland, Australia.
2)The Belize Barrier Reef-second largest in the world, stretching from southern Quintana Roo, Mexico and all along the coast of Belize down to the Bay Islands of Honduras.
3)The New Caledonia Barrier Reef-second longest double barrier reef in the world, with a length of about 1500km.
4)The Andros, Bahamas Barrier Reef-third largest in the world, following along the east coast of Andros Island, Bahamas between Andros and Nassau.
5)The Red Sea Coral Reef- located off the coast of Egypt and Saudi Arabia.
6)Pulley Ridge-deepest photosynthetic coral reef, Florida

What is a Coral Reef?

Even before you can go on and venture into our blog on how to save the coral reefs, you must first know what is a coral reef.
Most people think about the coral reefs in this way:" Coral reefs are the plants in the sea and do not really affect our enviroment except for our enviroment's beauty."
Well coral reefs are actually more than meets the eye. Coral reefs are actually carbonate mineral structures produced by living organisms. Apparently, coral reefs actually come in many forms. Such as:
1)Fringing Reef- a reef that is directly attached to a shore or borders it with an intervening shallow channel or lagoon.
2)Barrier Reef-a reef separated from a mainland or island shore by a deep lagoon (one famous barrier reef is the great barrier reef at the sea near Australia which is possible to be seen in outer space).
3)Patch reef-an isolated, often circular reef, usually within a lagoon or embayment.
4)Apron reef-a short reef resembling a fringing reef, but more sloped; extending out and downward from a point or peninsular shore.
5)Bank reef- linear or semi-circular in outline, larger than a patch reef.
6)Ribbon reef-a long, narrow, somewhat winding reef, usually associated with an atoll lagoon.
7)Atoll reef-a more or less circular or continuous barrier reef extending all the way around a lagoon without a central island.
8)Table reef-an isolated reef, approaching an atoll type, but without a lagoon
